What a bathroom remodel costs in Tacoma.
Planning ranges for retiles, conversions and full remodels, and the old-house factors that push a Tacoma number up or down.
Most Tacoma bathroom projects fall somewhere between a shower retile in the high four or low five figures and a primary-bath rebuild well into five figures. Where yours lands depends on how much changes, what is found behind the walls and what you choose for tile and fixtures. The table below gives planning ranges, not quotes.
Planning ranges

$20,000 to $40,000Primary bath with layout changes
Walls or fixtures relocated, larger shower, double vanity, heated floor
$40,000 to $80,000+Estimates only, for planning. Not a quote. Your written estimate is the real number.
Why older Tacoma homes can cost more
The same five-by-eight bathroom costs more to remodel in a 1915 North End house than in a 1995 University Place house. The difference is almost never the tile. It is what the old house asks for before tile can go up: leveling a sagging floor, replacing a corroded section of galvanized pipe, reframing a wall that was cut for a long-gone radiator, or running a new fan duct where none existed.
We price the known parts of the job firmly and talk openly about the likely unknowns, so a surprise behind the plaster turns into a conversation, not a shock.
What moves the number the most
Roughly in order of impact on a typical Tacoma job:
- Moving the drain, valve or toilet
- Condition of floor framing and subfloor
- Size of the shower and how much tile goes on the walls
- Tile pattern: straight lay is quicker than herringbone or mosaic
- Fixture and vanity choices
- Glass enclosure style
- Add-ons like heated floors, niches and benches
Ways to spend less without cutting corners
Keep the toilet, tub or shower drain and the vanity where they are. Choose a mid-priced porcelain tile and spend on a good valve. Skip the tile wainscot outside the shower. What we will not trim is the waterproofing layer, because that is the part that makes the rest of the money worth spending.
Getting a real number
A planning range helps you decide whether to start. A real price needs eyes on the room, a look under the floor and a list of what you want. Estimates are free, and the written scope is detailed enough to compare against other bids.
Questions
Cost questions, answered plainly.
Are these prices quotes?
No. They are planning ranges for Tacoma-area projects. Your written estimate after a walkthrough is the number that counts.
Why is there such a wide range?
Because two bathrooms of the same size can need very different work. A sound 1990s room and a 1920s room with old pipes are different jobs.
Do permit fees come out of these ranges?
Permit fees depend on the project and are set by the city. If your project needs a permit, we will include it in your estimate.
