Short answer

A walk-in shower is a shower you step into without climbing over a tub wall, usually with a low curb or no curb at all. We build them custom on site: a sloped pan, waterproofing over every wet surface, then tile, so the size and shape fit your room instead of a catalog.

Prefab base or custom pan?

A one-piece base is quick but only comes in set sizes. A custom pan can be any width, take a linear drain, run curbless, and be tiled to match the walls. In an older Tacoma house where nothing is quite square, custom is often the only way to make the shower fit cleanly.

Curbless in an older house

Curbless showers need the floor inside the shower to sit lower than the bathroom floor. In houses with deep joists and crawlspace access, that can sometimes be done by modifying the framing. On a slab or in a tight upstairs space, it may not be possible. We check before promising.

Details that make a walk-in work every day

  • A niche sized for the bottles you actually own
  • A bench or foot ledge for shaving and sitting
  • A handheld sprayer on a slide bar
  • Smaller floor tile for grip on a slope
  • Glass planned around the tile, not the other way around
  • A fan close enough to the shower to clear the steam

Steam and Tacoma winters

A larger open shower puts more moisture into the room, and Tacoma air stays damp most of the year. A properly sized fan ducted outdoors, and ideally on a timer, is the difference between a fresh room and one that grows spots on the ceiling.

Questions

Walk-in shower questions from Tacoma.

What is the smallest walk-in shower that works?

Many people find around 36 by 36 inches the practical minimum, but larger feels much better. We will look at what your room allows.

Do walk-in showers need a door?

Not always. A fixed glass panel works if the shower is deep enough and the head is placed well. Otherwise a door keeps water in.

Are curbless showers safe for aging in place?

They are one of the most useful upgrades for it, especially with blocking for grab bars and a handheld sprayer.
